Anyone who works in product development understands how dynamic such processes can be—and the costs involved when they go awry. Manufacturers embrace a host of initiatives to meet current pressures and demands and improve different aspects of product development. To better understand some of these initiatives, Lifecycle Insights conducted the 2020 Engineering Executive’s Strategic Agenda study late last year.

Unsurprisingly, 30% of survey respondents ranked “satisfying target requirements” as their top issue, while 23% ranked it in second place. But it is just as critical that requirements management capabilities are integrated with other capabilities like multidisciplinary BOM management, project and program management, and much more. The use of these solutions for requirements-driven design helps manufacturers meet all design requirements and address any potential issues in the design process’s earliest stages.

The continuing evolution of what manufacturers need to manage requirements effectively, however, doesn’t end there.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly sourcing entire systems—not just components—to suppliers. That means more design work is being pushed down in the supply chain where requirements have already been allocated. Even though this work is being outsourced, OEMs need to track and manage all requirements. It’s even more important that organizations work from a single source of truth shared across different engineering departments and between OEMs and suppliers, ensuring everyone is on the same page early and throughout development. Then everyone can make sure that all requirements are being effectively satisfied.
